The International English Language Testing System

(IELTS) is a test of English language proficiency, developed by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. IELTS is now accepted as evidence of a prospective student’s level of English by most universities in English speaking countries.

There are two different IELTS tests that you can do:

Academic and General. If you are interested in studying at a university in an English speaking country you will need to take the academic version of IELTS. IELTS is not a test that you can pass or fail. Your assessment will be reported according to a scale from bands one to nine. You will need to contact the university you wish to enter to find out the IELTS score they require for entry into your chosen course. Band one indicates that you have virtually no English at all. Band nine is considered native speaker proficiency. Universities in countries like the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia typically require a band score of between 6 and 7.

The test covers the 4 linguistic skills: Reading, writing, Listening and Speaking.

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System.

It measures ability to communicate in English across all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking – for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication.

Since 1989, IELTS has been proven and trusted worldwide to provide a secure, global, authentic and customer-focused test which measures true to life ability to communicate in English. More than 6,000 education institutions, faculties, government agencies and professional organisations around the world recognise IELTS scores as a trusted and valid indicator of ability to communicate in English.

Over 1,000,000 people a year are now using IELTS to open doors throughout the English-speaking world and beyond. The test is taken every year across 120 countries, and is one of the fastest growing English language tests in the world, and sets the standard in integrity, research and innovation.

When the question is English language ability – IELTS is the answer.

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS is required for entry to university in the UK and other countries.

Who is it for?

IELTS is recognised by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognised by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. More than 700,000 people a year take the test.

What is the IELTS test like?

You can choose between the Academic or General Training versions of the test. All candidates do the same Listening and Speaking sections.

The test has four sections:

1. Listening – 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes
2. Speaking – interview, 15 minutes
3. Reading – different for Academic or General Training – 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes
4. Writing – different for Academic or General Training – 2 pieces of writing, 60 minutes

Out of 9 for each section and an overall score out of 9.

Multi-level. You get a score between 1 and 9. Half scores such as 6.5 are possible. Universities often demand an IELTS score of 6 or 7. They may also demand a minimum score in each of the 4 sections.

What is the computer-based test?

At some centres you can take the computer-based version of IELTS. This is only available for academic modules at some centres only.

How much does it cost to take IELTS?

Fees are set by test centres. Expect to pay around £90 GBP or $140 USD.
